TERRY BEITAL ((RICHMAN))
January 27th, 2017

Wilmington, NC: Terry Richman of Wilmington and Bald Head Island, North Carolina passed away on January 27th, 2017, after a courageous three-year battle
with breast cancer. She was among family at home but "wasn't finished yet" and had so much more to do.

She wanted us to say that none of her accomplishments and successes were hers alone but involved colleagues and family. Her husband of more than 50
years, Ted, thought that she could do anything and her daughter, Lisa, knew that she could. She extends gratitude to son-in-law Dean Segovis who completes
the family.

She will also miss sister Mallory, sister-in-law Ruth (Kenny), nieces Heather (Ron) and Caryn (Matt), cousin Landon, her mother Sophie and many, many friends,
relatives and colleagues in Rochester, NY, Wilmington, NC and elsewhere.

Terry is most proud of her work with her friends, partners and clients at Underberg & Kessler, working with the Woman's Bar, Community Foundations and Life
Long Learning, and her long term involvement with public radio.

But she was more; a warm and modest woman who was a force, who made things happen in her communities, for her colleagues and for her many friends and
family who loved her. She didn't want us to mention: her Girl Scout leadership days, being a financial director for the Rochester Democratic party, she was one
of a very few women Labor Arbitrators, started law school at age 39 (Law Review), Co-founded a law firm for the working poor, solving environmental and other
problems at U & K for clients, active participation on the boards of the Community Foundation, the Hemophilia Association and WXXI Broadcasting. All while
mentoring woman lawyers, raising a wonderful daughter, and reading bales of mystery books. When she moved to Wilmington, NC she continued with her firm
while joining the board of the local public radio station WHQR, Co-founding a community giving organization and being a part of the leadership board of UNCW
Life Long Learning. She liked to travel (Maine, Galapagos and Provence were her favorites) and loved the peace and tranquility of Bald Head Island. So we
won't mention any of these.

The family will be sharing memories at the family home, 810 Johns Orchard Lane, Wilmington, NC from 1:00 to 4:00 Saturday and Sunday, February 18 and
19th. A brief moment of remembrance will be on February 18 at 3:00.

In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to your local public radio station or WHQR, 254 South Front Street, Wilmington, NC 28401

Nancy Carpenter (Cook)
May 30, 1991

After LMHS graduation, Nancy attended Berkeley secretarial school in NYC. After finishing that program, Nancy was employed at Grumman Aircraft in Bethpage, and later at Photocircuits Corp. She married Stephen B. Cook (LMHS '59) and continued working while he attended medical school. Steve entered the Army after med school and they were stationed for several years at Fort Lewis in Washington state. They later moved to Delmar NY and then Peterborough NH, where years later Nancy and Steve were divorced.

Nancy and Steve had four children: Brian, Gregory, Christopher and Rachel. Gregory died in infancy. After Nancy's divorce, she moved to France with the kids for several years, studying French language and earning credits toward a bachelor's degree. She continued her studies after return to the U.S., earning her bachelors degree from the Thomas Edison State University in NJ. Nancy died on May 30, 1991 at home in Peterborough. She is survived by her children Brian, Chris and Rachel, her sister Carol Ketcham (LMHS '59) and her brother Robin Carpenter (LMHS '62), as well as siblings Christopher, Richard and Libby by her father's second marriage.

Arline Gruber (Kaplan)
May 26, 2009
Marcy, I just read of the passing of Arline Gruber/Kaplan. She was my sorority sister and we worked in Grants on the turnpike after school. Arline was the only one with a car and, in the summer, she would round us all up and we'd go to Jones Beach, then rush home, shower, and go to Grants. I was so saddened to hear she is gone.

She was laid to rest yesterday (10/12) at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale. I checked to see if there was an obituary and couldn't find one. She had 2 children, Anthony and Linda. She had three grandchildren, all boys. She had been divorced for many years but her ex predeceased her. I'll look for photos of her in my many years of albums.

September 19 at 2:43am

Richard Joseph Hawkey, 93, died peacefully at home on Saturday with his loving family around him.

After graduating from St. John’s University, Mr. Hawkey taught English at St. John’s Prep in Brooklyn. When he and Marion moved their growing family to North Massapequa, he began a distinguished career in the Levittown Public Schools, from which he retired in 1988. While at Levittown Memorial, he not only shared his passion for language and literature with thousands of students, he also advised the newspaper and served as department chairman. At the time of his death, he was still in touch with past students, many of whom are now retired themselves, and former colleagues, whom he mentored. After retiring from full time teaching, Mr. Hawkey continued to teach for another 15 years as an adjunct instructor at Hofstra University.

Richard is mourned by his children and their spouses: Mary and Tom Verdi, Regina and Jeffrey Vieira, Marian Hawkey, Richard and Maryanne Hawkey, John Hawkey, and Rosemary Hawkey. He leaves behind seven grandchildren: Ellie, Rina, Avi, Francis, Elsie, Grayce, and Adam; five great-grandchildren: Gia, Adigan, Jack, Isabella and Andre; and sisters-in-law Audrey and Ann. HAWKEY - Richard Joseph, 93, died peacefully at home on Saturday with his loving family around him. Mr. Hawkey was born in New York City in 1923, son of Richard Hawkey and Elsie McGinley, and was raised primarily in Valley Stream, where he attended Central High School. Active in drama and the newspaper, he also met his future wife, Marion Riordan, there. After working at the Daily News as a runner, Mr. Hawkey served his country in the U.S. Army in WW II, rising to Master Sergeant. He served in the European theater until 1946, returning with a desire to teach. After graduating from St. John's University, Mr. Hawkey taught English at St. John's Prep in Brooklyn. When he and Marion moved their growing family to North Massapequa, he began a distinguished career in the Levittown Public Schools, from which he retired in 1988. At the time of his death, he was still in touch with past students, many of whom are now retired themselves, and former colleagues, whom he mentored. After retiring from full time teaching, Mr. Hawkey continued to teach for another 15 years as an adjunct instructor at Hofstra University. In their nearly 64 years together, Richard and Marion shared many interests: going to the theater, especially Broadway, watching classic movies, and avidly following current events and politics. Mr. Hawkey was known for his dry wit, his dedication to education, and his devotion to his wife and family.
